Sparrows Point Company Hiring for Virginia Tunnel Project

SKW Constructors has announced it will hire as many as 100 direct employees at its Sparrows Point Shipyard and Industrial Park site.

The company will also hire subcontractors that will hire additional carpenters, concrete finishers, mechanics, ironworkers, surveyors, truck drivers and laborers.

The company has a contract to provide fans and huge reinforced concrete tubes for tunnels being built in Hampton Roads, VA, according to a statement from Baltimore County Government.

"We are thrilled SKW is bringing jobs back to the Point," Baltimore County Councilman John Olszewski Sr said in the statement. "We will continue to work with the company to be sure our local workers and contractors benefit from this opportunity."

SKW Constructors, a joint venture of Skanska, Kiewit and Weeks, already has awarded subcontracts to 57 Baltimore metro area companies valued at nearly $5 million, according to the statement. SKW is looking for additional subcontractors, particularly minority- and women-owned companies who are currently certified or can be certified by the Virginia Minority Business system.

"Sparrows Point is an ideal location for the manufacturing of materials for our Elizabeth River Tunnels project. We are looking forward to becoming part of a community with great talent and heart," Sal Taddeo, executive vice president of Skanska, said in the statement.

An information session for job candidates and subcontractors will be held at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Essex campus of The Community College of Baltimore County.

At the session, subcontractors will be able to meet one-on-one with SKW officials to discuss specific opportunities available and their criteria.

Those seeking jobs with the company can receive information about the jobs available, on-the-job training opportunities and learn about the next steps in the application process.

Job seekers should be aware this is not a job fair, according to Fronda Cohen, a spokeswoman for Baltimore County.

"Please note that this is not a job fair, but an opportunity for job seekers to find out what is available," she said in an email to Dundalk Patch. "There will be no interview opportunities and resumes will not be accepted at the February 28 session."
