5K To Support Two Dundalk Schools

Thrive Baltimore hosts its fifth annual Pond Skipper 5K next Saturday.

A Dundalk-focused nonprofit wants residents to lace up for two elementary schools.

Thrive Baltimore is sponsoring its fifth annual Pond Skipper 5K at Stansbury Park on Saturday, Oct. 6, with proceeds to benefit Grange and Battle Grove elementary schools.

Thrive team member Tara Rasmussen said the 5K is the largest event of the year for the organization, which primarily supports Dundalk-area initiatives. Last year, about 150 runners turned out to raise $4,000 for Dundalk Middle School. This year, between the two elementary schools, Rasmusses said the organization hopes to more than double turnout.

"We didn't have a lot of school participation [last year] and this year we're expecting a lot of school participation," she said. "Students are registering, teachers are registering."

This is the first year the organization has opted to split proceeds between two schools. Rasmussen said the organization asked schools to submit proposals, with the idea of picking the best one.

"We couldn't pick between the two, we liked both of their proposals," she said. "We just decided we can support both."

Grange Elementary will use the funds to enhance science, technology, engineering and math education and engagement. The funds will help the school organize field trips and assemblies at the school.

Battle Grove Elementary will use the funding to restore $26,000 in federal Title I funding the school is set to lose in the coming year due to cuts in Title I. The money will also allow the school to expand Scholastic Math Inventory, a computer-adaptive math assessment.

Online preregistration for the race is closed, but registration will still be available on the day of the event. Visit Thrive Baltimore's website for more information.
