Dundalk Chamber Golf Tournament Raises Over $25,000

Event raises money for local students to attend CCBC Dundalk

The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce's Fourth Annual Golf Tournament last Monday was a solid success. The event, held at the Sparrows Point Country Club, raised over $25,000 in scholarship money for students of Dundalk, Sparrows Point, Patapsco and Sollers Point High Schools to attend CCBC Dundalk.

The winning foursome represented Ruth's Chris Steak House. Owner Steve DeCastro, who played along with Bill Shenas, Mathew Waylett and David Sade, shot a 59 in the Captain’s Choice Scramble format,

“The scramble format really allows golfers of all levels to participate,” said Woodrow Powell, director of community relations for CCBC Dundalk. “Every player in a foursome hits a drive, the captain chooses the best drive, and every player takes their next shot from that position.”

Although the golfers avoided the scorching 100-degree temperatures of the previous week, they still were battling some hot weather.

“It was warm,” Powell said. “But not quite as hot as it was last week. Plus, we started at 8:30 (a.m.) and ended around 1, so we were done before the hottest part of the day. Also we finished right before that bad thunderstorm.”

The foursome from Tirschman Pallet placed second with McCoy Appraisal Services taking third. Thompson Automotive Group was fourth.

Linda Twenty won the prize for longest drive by a female golfer while Barry Salzman crushed the longest drive on the men's side. Doug Welsh was the winner in the closest to the pin competition.

“To be able to have an event at a prestigious course like Sparrows Point Country Club really is a big deal for us,” Powell said. “The course really is beautiful. The trees are a little more mature, the greens are slicker, and the hazards are tougher than most of the local public courses.”

The presenting sponsors of the event were M & T Bank, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Mars Super Markets, The Thompson Automotive Group and CCBC, who all donated at least $2,000 to the scholarship fund.

Walmart and Rhinehart Railroad Construction participated as business sponsors donating at least $500. Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk provided the golf balls, and Thompson Automotive sponsored the hole-in-one contest.

Autotrader.com sponsored the longest drive event.
