Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Names 2011 Outstanding Teacher Recipients

Teachers from Sandy Plains Elementary, Dundalk Middle School, Patapsco High School and CCBC Dundalk to be honored at fourth annual banquet.

Based on their dedicated service to their school and community, as well as their exceptional professional expertise, four teachers—one each from a local elementary, middle and high school, and a CCBC instructor—were selected from a pool of 14 nominees to receive the fourth annual Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher Awards.

They will be honored at an awards dinner on Thursday, April 28, from 5:30-8:30pm at Martin’s East.

Erin Redline, Sandy Plains Elementary School

An outstanding special education resource teacher/team leader for the Aliza Brandwine Center, Redline’s passion for children and excellence in teaching and learning is evident in the exemplary, developmentally appropriate instruction she delivers to young children and their families. Besides providing engaging lessons focused on early literacy and math skills, she fosters parent-school connections that build positive and lasting relationships. She holds family night sessions at school, makes home visitations, and offers valuable parenting resources. Redline even provides Spanish translation services. She has taught for 17 years in the Baltimore County Public Schools, seven of these in the Dundalk area.

Gail Woods, Patapsco High School

An outstanding music teacher, Woods develops the talents of her students and fosters a love of music in them that remains long after graduation. She dedicates countless hours to prepare students for extracurricular activities such as musicals and festivals. Her exemplary work is evident in the consistent top ratings her students receive from county assessments and festivals. As Music Department chair/vocal instructor, she has used her leadership skills and innovative instructional techniques to transform the culture of the department and elevate effectiveness. She still finds time to lead the gift drive for the Dundalk Crisis Center every Christmas. Woods has taught for 29 years in the Dundalk area.

Teresa Lenahan, Dundalk Middle School

An outstanding art teacher, Lenahan provides her students with a solid foundation in the elements of art and understanding of how art impacts their daily lives. She uses art to promote positive values in her students, such as staying alcohol and drug free. She is a strong role model for commitment to community service. Her students participate in numerous projects, including the PTA/Heritage Festival, Dundalk High School/Community Art Show, and the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life. Lenahan somehow finds time to be an active member of the Breakfast Optimist Club of Dundalk and a sponsor for the Junior Optimist Club. Lenahan has taught for 15 years in the Dundalk area.

Marion Szymanski, CCBC Dundalk

An outstanding mathematics teacher, Szymanski, in addition to his 33 years as a Baltimore County Public School teacher and administrator, has spent the past 24 years teaching college-level mathematics at CCBC Dundalk. During this time, he also provided leadership for numerous professional activities. This lifelong educator is dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. Szymanski has received many awards, including honorary life membership from the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers. His long and outstanding record of community service includes myriad hours of volunteer service for community improvement associations, churches, hospitals and recreation councils in the Dundalk area.
