Let CCBC Events Help You Through The Winter Doldrums

The Community College of Baltimore County offers music recitals, theater performances, star-gazing parties and guest speakers.

The Community College of Baltimore County is more than a place to learn. It also offers a variety of entertainment, from student recitals to professional performances; college and job fairs; open houses and informational sessions about individual academic programs; and talks by guest speakers.

Here's what CCBC has on tap for the remainder of January through February:

Observing Sessions:  Star Party at the CCBC Dundalk Observatory
7-9 pm, Observatory, (first right after the entrance) CCBC Dundalk, 7200 Sollers Point Road
See celestial bodies up close with CCBC’s powerful Celestron 14-inch CGE 1400 XLT telescope.

CCBC Essex Music Forum:  The Drum Runners
12:20 p.m., Arts and Humanities Hall, Recital Hall, CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Boulevard
CCBC alumnus James Gummer, Abigail Palmer and Steve Wannall make up this dynamic and entertaining percussion troupe.  Their show exploring the world of rhythm will be followed by an interactive workshop with CCBC students and audience members.

Feb. 8
Benjamin Banneker Planetarium Show:  Benjamin Banneker’s Astronomy
10-11 am, Laboratory Building, 003, CCBC Catonsville, 800 S. Rolling Road.
Learn how Benjamin Banneker, a farmer in neighboring Oella, taught himself astronomy, helped survey the boundaries of the District of Columbia and authored almanacs in the 1790s to become the first African American man of science.

Feb. 8 (Snow date – Feb. 15)
CCBC Dental Hygiene Program/MDHA: Sealant Saturday
10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Dental Arts Center, CCBC Dundalk, 7200 Sollers Point Road
Together with the Maryland Dental Hygienists’ Association, the Dental Hygiene program will provide clear, colorless, protective coatings (sealants) on permanent molar teeth for children ages 6 through 18 to help prevent tooth decay.  Each child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to participate.
Free.  Appointments required.   To request an appointment, call 443-840-3340 and provide a daytime phone number where you can be reached to schedule an appointment.

CCBC Essex Music Forum:  CCBC Faculty Recital

Professional musicians on the CCBC Music faculty will present selections from classical to jazz, in solo and ensemble.

In conjunction with the reading of David K. Shipler’s “The Working Poor: Invisible in America,” the Rob Levit Trio will perform original songs related to the topics in the book and other music and poetry related to poverty and the working poor.

ABC News Senior Correspondent Byron Pitts on "Step Out on Nothing"
2014 President’s Distinguished African-American Lecture

CCBC celebrates Black History Month with its annual President’s Distinguished African-American Lecture.  This year’s speaker is Baltimore native Byron Pitts, now a Senior News Correspondent with ABC News.  He will discuss his book, “Step Out on Nothing: How Faith and Family Helped Me Overcome Life’s Challenges.”

Dundalk Community Theatre: Driving Miss Daisy
Feb. 21, 22, 28, March 1 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 23, March 2 at 3 p.m.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this is the charming, humorous and utterly heartwarming tale of the unlikely friendship that blossoms between a prickly, elderly Southern matriarch and her kindhearted chauffeur.  Spanning decades of prejudice inequality and civil unrest, the pair transcend their differences to form a lasting bond.
