Patapsco High Student of the Week: Travis Bender

The Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts student is honored for his work on an anti-bullying effort.

After taking a break during school weeks shortened by Hurricane Sandy and the presidential election, Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts has resumed its Student of the Week program.

This week's honor goes to senior Travis Bender, who was nominated by English teacher Natalie Avallone.

Bender was cited for his help in running the school's Ally Week, a national youth-led effort empowering students to be allies against anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name-calling in K-12 schools, according to Avallone.

Bender helped produce the public service announcement video for the week, helped design buttons, staffed the table in the morning and during lunch, and did it "all with a smile," according to educators.

The enthusiastic student was also cited for assisting other students and teachers, contributing to class discussions and maintaining excellent grades.

"He is respectful to others and extremely pleasant to know," Avallone said in a statement.
