Whiz Kid of the Week: Meet Alexis Wendt

The Sparrows Point junior was recently named a Carson Scholar, earning a $1,000 college scholarship.

Each week, Dundalk Patch seeks suggestions from readers and schools for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these kids and teens, and will select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.

Nominated by one of her high school teachers, the Dundalk Patch Whiz Kid of the Week is:

●      Age: 16

●     Class: Junior

●     School: Sparrows Point High

●     Accomplishment: Alexis was one of 19 Baltimore County Public Schools students named as a 2011 Carson Scholar. The Carson Scholars Fund was founded by world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson. Each Carson Scholar receives a $1,000 college scholarship award.

 ●     Extracurricular activities: An Honor Society student, Alexis plays for Sparrows Point’s varsity softball and volleyball teams. She’s a member of the school’s steel band and color guard, and is also serving as choreographer for the Sparrows Point’s spring musical, Little Shop of Horrors. She’s part of Sparrows Point’s magnet S.P.E.C.I.E.S. program, dances with Watersedge rec’s dance program, participates in theater with Sky’s the Limit, and works part-time at Pizza John’s in Essex.

 ●     Key to Awesomeness: “She’s such a hard-working kid, always punctual and prompt and getting a lot stuff done,” said guidance counselor Maureen Simpson. “She’s trying to be the student representative on the Board of Education now. She’s the type that gets everything done perfectly, always on top of it all.”
