Boys Soccer Playoffs: Dundalk Beats Glenelg 3-2

Dundalk Forward Shawn Geary's three goals propel the Owls to the Regional Semifinals.

The boys soccer team rallied in the second half to defeat visiting Glenelg in the second round of the 2A state soccer tournament with a 3-2 victory.

The Owls team earned a bye in the first round of the tournament due to its strong 8-3 regular season record, while the Gladiators beat Chesapeake 4-0 in the opening round.

Glenelg rode that momentum into their contest with Dundalk, jumping out to a 2-1 lead at halftime.

“We were down at the half, but this team has a lot of heart and we didn’t give up,” said Dundalk coach Brad Senft. “In the second half we fought hard and took the lead to beat a very good Glenelg team.”

After halftime, the Owls defensive unit regrouped, holding the Gladiators scoreless in the second half. Goalkeeper Jeff Burnette, who had 12-saves in the game, credited his defenders as well as the constant offensive pressure with his second half shut-out.

“Shawn Geary had an amazing game,” said Burnette. “His three goals took a lot of pressure off of us defensively. I have to give it up for my defense, in the second half they really stepped it up.”

Geary’s two goals in the second half put Dundalk in the 2A North Regional Semi-Finals against Loch Raven Thursday at 7 at CCBC Dundalk. Loch Raven is coming off of a 9-0 quarterfinal victory over Ranallstown.
