Girl Pointers Defeat Smithsburg 2-1, Take Class 1A State Soccer Title

The Pointers won their first girls soccer state title in the school's 100-plus-year history.

The Sparrows Point High School Pointers' girls soccer team traveled to UMBC this evening to take on Smithsburg High School of Washington County with a state title on the line and is coming home with the big trophy and bragging rights for the next year.

The Pointers won the Class 1A girls state soccer championship by a score of 2-1 over the Leopards.

The Leopards scored first with a goal from Vanesa Cuevas and the Pointers tied it up on a score by Lindsea Webb, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Freshman Kasie Lambert put the Pointers ahead to stay when she scored with 2:16 remaining in the game.

Baltimore County was well represented in the girls soccer championships, with three teams in their respective class finals, but the Pointers claimed the only title. Loch Raven High lost to Century High of Carroll County, 3-0, in the Class 2A final, while Catonsville fell 2-0 to Walt Whitman High of Montgomery County in the Class 4A championship game.
