Girls' Lax Playoffs: Sparrows Point Beat Western Tech 17-3

The Lady Pointers hustled through a big playoff win over Western Tech, them hustled to get ready for prom. The host Chesapeake High School of Baltimore County in the next round Monday.

The Sparrows Point girls' lacrosse team looked to finish their first round playoff game against Western Tech as soon as possible. They had more important things to do Saturday night – namely senior prom.

Still, they took care of business downing the visiting Wolverines 17-3.

“We were just trying to get a win here and move on,” said Pointers head coach Lori Fawkes. "We were working on our transition offense and pressure defense.”

Miranda Rudacille lead the Pointers with four goals and three assists. Becca Zafi, Maci Zellers, Brittani Lafollette, and Maggie Shifflett all scored two goals apiece. The Pointers shared the wealth as Kayla Willis, Bailey Pratt and Savannah Dodd also added goals.

“We came out and started hot” said Shifflett. "Once we got a big lead we toned it down and used the game to work on our offense. Our goal is to win the region."

Politely cutting the interview short with a reporter she said: "I'm sorry I've got to go get my hair done. I have prom!”

In the 2A-1A Region North semifinals Monday the Pointers host Chesapeake High School of Baltimore County. Eventually, they are looking forward to a match-up with Loch Raven in the regional finals.

“It's like clock work, the last several years we have played Loch Raven in the playoffs,” said Fawkes. "Last year they knocked us out and we are looking to get revenge.”

Sparrows Point is the No. 1 seed in the region and will host their next two games. If they win both they will play in the state semifinals held at UMBC's Retrieve Stadium Tuesday May 24. Their next game is at home on Monday.
