Boys Lax Playoffs: Sparrows Point Downs Carver 13-1

The Pointers now host Pikesville Monday at 4 p.m. in the region semifinals, a team they beat with a last second goal during the regular season. In other playoff action, Dundalk downed Lansdowne 5-4 to advance. The face No. 1 seed Hereford Monday.

The Sparrows Point boys' lacrosse team made quick work of the visiting Carver Center for Arts and Technology, defeating the team from Towson 13-1 on Saturday in the regional playoffs.

The Pointers jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first half, and then proceeded to slow the game down. Pointer head coach Jay Bechtel emptied his bench and ordered his team not to shoot.

“We wanted to get the game over with because the seniors have prom tonight,” said Bechtel. "We tried to play keep away, move the ball and run our plays without shooting. We also wanted them to work on developing their opposite hand.”

The Pointers will host Pikesville on Monday at 4 p.m. Pikesville defeated Owings Mills 11-8 in their first round playoff game. The game should be entertaining as Sparrows Point scored with 0.3 seconds left in the teams' regular season match-up to take the lead and win.

In other playoff action, Dundalk downed Lansdowne 5-4 Saturday to advance. The Owls travel and face No. 1 seed Hereford Monday.

In the Carver game, Pointer attackman Alex Jakubowski lead the team with four goals and one assist.

“It;s playoff time, you just have to play as hard as you can," said Jakubowski. "I'm just going to keep pushing every game, hopefully put the ball in the net and win some games.”

The highlight of the second half came when senior long pole defenseman Mike Iman scooped up a ground ball in his own zone and took it coast to coast for the goal.

“It was fun,” said Mike Iman. "I didn't get to play a lot this game so when I saw the opening I went for it.”

The Pointers have the No. 1 seed in the 2A-1A  Region North playoffs and will host the next two games provided they keep winning. The state semifinals will be held at Bel Air high school on May 21-22 and the finals will be held at UMBC's Retriever Stadium on May 24.
