Playoff Baseball: Dundalk Rolls 10-0; Patriots Out

No. 2 seeded Owls dominate Overlea to advance to 2A North region semifinals Wednesday. Patapsco dropped a heartbreaker at Poly in 3A North region quarterfinal.

Dundalk starting pitcher Jose Welsh dominated Overlea over five innings Monday afternoon, allowing just three hits on the way to a five-inning, 10-run rule shortened, 10-0 win.

The victory sets up a 2A North region semifinal game with the winner of the Lansdowne-Randallstown game, also Monday. Dundalk, the No. 2 seed in the region, will host that game, mostly likely a rematch with Lansdowne who beat the Owls earlier this season.

The Owls took advantage of numerous walks, errors and passed balls – adding timely hits – for the big win Monday afternoon at home. The devastating blow was a bases-loaded triple by Casey Rappazzo.

Third-year coach Brian Powell said the key to Welsh’s performance was getting ahead of the hitters.

“First pitch strikes,” Powell said. “Then he was able to go to the curveball. “

By only throwing five innings, Welsh remains available for relief Wednesday. And if all goes well, the right-hander will start Friday.

The win moved the Owls overall record this season to 13-5.

Zyle Babcock, Rappazzo, Chuck Livingston and Alex Brilhart each scored two runs for the Owls.

Last year, Dundalk advanced to the 2A North Regional Championship where they eventually fell to Eastern Tech, 6-3.

Patapsco falls 4-3

Patapsco pitcher Shaun Wich pitched six innings of no-hit baseball before things unraveled for the Patriots in the final stanza at Poly Monday afternoon.

Ahead 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, a couple of walks, Poly’s first base hit and a passed ball proved Patapsco’s undoing. Poly scored three runs in their last at bat to steal a 4-3 win in the 3A North region semifinal.

Patapsco knocked off City in the first round of the playoffs Friday.

“For six innings that was the best game we played all year,” said Patapsco assistant coach Ryan Weidmann.
