Playoff Girls Lax: Pointers Rally, Crush Chesapeake

Trailing most of the first half, Sparrows Point girls rally for big 22-8 win over Chesapeake-BC.

The Chesapeake Bayhawks came out early, taking advantage of their speed and athleticism to take a 4-2 lead in their 2A-1A North region semifinal at Sparrows Point Monday. They maintained a lead until 3:36 in the first half when the Pointers gained their first lead at 7-6.

Incredibly, after trailing nearly the entire first half, Sparrows Point outscored visiting Chesapeake, from Essex, 15-2 in the second half, on their way to a 22-8 win.

Seeded No. 1 in the region, Sparrows Point will host No. 3 seed Loch Raven Wednesday, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Loch Raven beat Owings Mills 14-2 to advance.

In the first half Monday, the Pointers seemed unable to defend the fast break attack of the Bayhawks, which consisted of a Bayhawk player keeping the ball in her stick and out running her Pointer defender to the goal for a point blank shot.

Chesapeake almost tied the game with seven seconds left in the first half, but a great save by Sparrows Point goalie Becky Wortham kept the score 7-6.

At the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, Sparrows Point began to connect on their passes close to the goal, giving the Pointer attackers point short-range shots. Stellar play from Bayhawk goalie Dae Evans kept Chesapeake in the game. Evans recorded an impressive 16 saves in the game.

“Their goalie is very tall, and we kept shooting stick side high,” said Sparrows Point head coach Lori Fawkes. “Maci (Zellars)started having success shooting low, and the other girls adjusted their shots and the ball started going in.”

Zellars lead the team in goals with her sniper-like shooting skills, converting on all six of her shots. Brittani Lafollette was second on the team with five goals.

“I feel like a leader even as a junior,” said Zellars. “This is where my head is, I live to play lacrosse.”

“We are excited about the chance to play for a regional title,” said Fawkes. “But if we come out flat in the first half like today Loch Raven will take advantage.”
