Pointer Heavyweight Drew Clark Pins 100th Career Win

Commitment and hard work has paid off for the senior team captain aiming for his first state title.

Other than a home match, Sparrows Point heavyweight wrestler Andrew Clark could not have asked for a better venue than this weekend's Dundalk Duals to record his 100th career victory.

The stands were packed with supporters, family and friends. The Pointer fans were holding signs with "100" printed on them as the big guy used a half nelson to pin Fort Hill's Roger Dawson and have his arm raised for the 100th time.

“It feels amazing,” said Clark. "I can't really explain it. Four years of working my but off in that hot room. To work toward a goal for your entire high school career and finally see it realized is great. My main focus right now is winning states. That is all that matters now.”

Clark, a four-year varsity starter, credits Sparrows Point head coach Mike Whisner with convincing him to wrestle as a freshmen.

“I first met Drew his freshman year,” said Whisner. “I was the varsity offensive line coach at the time and he was a typical football lineman, he needed to lose some baby fat and get stronger. When I met him he informed me he was a basketball player and I informed him that he was now a wrestler.”

Whisner points out that Clark's strong commitment to wrestling in the offseason and his in-season work with assistant coach Tommy Free, also a member of the Sparrows Point 100 Win Club, as the main reasons Clark has developed into a technically skilled wrestler.

Rose Clark's eyes beam with pride as she talks about her son and his college plans.

“He has a 3.5 GPA and with his high SATS, college is the ultimate goal," she said. "I am so proud of him when he started I never thought he would come so far.”
