Wrestling: Dundalk Schools Crown 2 Baltimore County Champions

Pointer James "Country" Krug and Owl Wayne Maddox both won individual championships for their schools.

Sparrows Point High School finished seventh (93-points) and Dundalk High School finished ninth (85 -points) in the Baltimore County Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Owings Mills High School won their 12th consecutive county championship with 205 team points, nearly 20 more than runner-up and tournament host Perry Hall High School.

Pointer James “Country” Krug (182) and Owl Wayne Maddox (heavyweight) both won individual championships for their schools.

Krug, who came into the tournament ranked 18th by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, pinned his way into the semifinals, where he faced Dundalk's Kyle Byrd, who Krug narrowly defeated 4-2.

In the finals against Jerrell Ferguson of Millford Mill, Krug found himself down 2-1 with just 23 seconds left in the match. After several attempts to escape by standing upKrug executed a perfect "gramby" roll to score a reversal worth two points. He was able to hold Ferguson down from there to secure the victory.

“Country has really been pushed in some matches this weekend,” said Pointer coach Mike Whisner. “But he somehow finds a way to win. That will really prepare him for states.”

Maddox also pinned his way into the semifinals, where he beat Quincy Wise of Randallstown High School, 4-1. Maddox won the title by pinning top-seeded Darius Carroll of Owings Mills.

Owl teammates Alfred Martinez (126) and Joe Doetsch (195) both placed third while Byrd (182) finished sixth.

Pointer Shane Hammer (145) joined Krug in the finals, but was unable to defeat Eastern Tech's Dustin Shackleford, giving Hammer a second place finish. Other Pointers who placed included Randy Watson (120) in third and Teddy Cadd (152) in fourth.

Both teams are scheduled to compete in the regionals this weekend and state championships in two weeks
