Prep Wrestling: Eastern Tech Falls to Owings Mills in Region Finals

Mavericks top Sparrows Point in the semifinals before falling to perennial state power in the championship match.

Owings Mills recorded a pair of dominant victories before its home crowd to capture yet another North Region 1A/2A championship Wednesday night. On an evening when prolific head coach Guy Pritzker was honored for his 450 career victories at Owings Mills, the Eagles defeated both Edmondson, 82-0, and Eastern Tech, 62-6.

“It was part emotion, it was part talent, but whatever it was, these kids were really impressive today,” said Pritzker, who earned his 15th regional championship. “They only lost one match today. They were amazing.”

The finals opened at 112 pounds, and Warren Mack began the Owings Mills scoring immediately, recording a first-round pin. The Eagles, counting their sweep of all 14 matches in their semifinal against Edmondson and their first five matches against Eastern Tech, opened the event with 19 straight victories.

At 135 pounds, the Mavericks’ Stephen Beam halted the Eagles’ run when he pinned Brandon Hoffman. The six points were the only victory by an Eastern Tech wrestler as Owings Mills rolled through the back half of the Mavericks' roster, finishing with three straight pins by Russell Barnes (215), Darius Carroll (285) and Jason Escobar (103).

Eastern Tech first-year head coach Kevin Cross said he saw his young team grow and develop throughout the year. With only two seniors on the roster, he was battling to break .500 this season, and was very pleased to see his squad reach the regional finals.

“Owings Mills is a dominant team, one of the best in the area,” Cross said. “We needed to wrestle perfect tonight, and we were far from that.”

Owings Mills, the tournament’s top seed, was dominant from the start, scoring pins in the first seven weight classes to compete. At 145 pounds, Taran Carr captured four points, winning 15-1 after a full three rounds, to be the only Eagles wrestler not to record a pin. Owings Mills wrapped up the matchup against Edmondson with a final team score of 82-0.

Eastern Tech topped rival Sparrows Point by a much closer tally. At 112 pounds, Jordan Phillips upset Tony Collurafici to give the Mavericks an early advantage. Collurafici had defeated Phillips in their first meeting this season, by a 10-5 score, but the Eastern Tech wrestler stunned Sparrows Point by recording a pin in just over a minute into the first round.

Leading 34-23 with just two weight classes left to compete, the 215-pounders stepped to the middle of the mat. Two inexperienced wrestlers squared off with Sparrows Point’s Manny Pritt in need of a pin to give his team a chance to win.

“He had to go out there looking for a pin so he had to go for the headlock,” Pointers head coach Mike Whisner said. “He lost to him in double overtime the last time, and it would have been closer if he didn’t have to go for the pin. It was all or nothing.”

For Eastern Tech, Sam Caravello (103), Jordan Phillips (112), Kolten Fodel (130) and Stephen Beam (135) scored pins. For Sparrows Point, Zach Morton (160), Mike Iman (171) and Drew Clark (285) recorded pins. Cody Lewis, at 119 pounds, recorded the 98th victory of his high school career, defeating Kevin Isennock 7-1.
