Prep Wrestling: Eastern Tech Struggles to Win Over Dundalk

Mavericks won just three of eight contested matches in 48-30 victory.

Eastern Tech walked off the mat with a 48-30 victory over visiting Dundalk on Thursday night in Essex.

However, first-year Mavericks coach Kevin Cross did not talk like his team was victorious after the match. Eastern Tech was the beneficiary of five forfeit victories and won just three of eight contested matches.

“We did not wrestle well at all tonight,” Cross said. “We gave some matches away and may have overlooked this opponent.”

Dustin Shackelford (135 pounds), Nathaniel Gale (171) and Mitchell Burns (189) recorded pins for Eastern Tech (8-3), which is in contention for the regional duals heading into tonight’s 6:30 p.m. home match against Randallstown.

“We've had to deal with a lot the last few weeks with so many matches getting postponed due to snow, but we did come away with a win,” Eastern Tech senior 125-pounder Chuck Baugher said.

Dundalk set the tone early in the match – which began at 285 pounds – by winning three of the first four weight classes to take a 12-6 lead.

This included two come-from-behind victories as Blake Nelson (103), who scored three near-fall points in the final second to win 17-15 over Sam Caravello. Then, Alfred Martinez came up with a reversal late in the third period to defeat the Mavericks’ Kevin Isennock in their 119-pound match.

Eastern Tech then took control of the match. Baugher and Stephen Beam (130) won by forfeit and Shackelford pinned Dundalk’s Billy Martinez at 3:54, which gave the Mavericks a 24-12 lead, and they never looked back.

“All of the days we missed because of the snow led to some illnesses and injuries, which really hurt us tonight,” Dundalk coach Chad Goodnight said. “We have to look at the matches where we actually competed to judge our performance, and that will show we competed well.”

Thursday’s match was the second of three in three days this week for Eastern Tech, which lost on Wednesday at Perry Hall, 58-15. The Mavericks close out the regular season next week with home matches on Tuesday against Sparrows Point and Thursday against Lansdowne.
