Sparrows Point Girls Fall In Region Final

Loch Raven pulls away in the second half. Pointers look forward to reloading next year with core group of returning players.

The Sparrows Point girls lacrosse team lost to visiting Loch Raven 14-7 in the 2A/1A North region finals on Wednesday.

“I'm very proud of this team,” said Pointer head coach Lori Fawkes. “One of our goals was to make it to the regional finals. We were hoping to win this game, but Loch Raven is a very good team that is very well coached. They have great transition, great individual players and a stellar goalie. I think we gave them a fight.”

The strong defensive effort from the Raiders stifled the normally powerful Pointer attack.

“We didn't really key on any particular players,” said Loch Raven head coach Tracy Mabe. "We were just trying to shut of any drives to the goal by send defensive slides early.”

That defensive strategy seemed to work as no Sparrows Point player had more than one goal.

“There settled defense doubles and triples the ball,” said Fawkes,. "Our players were just having trouble finding the open girl.”

Loch Raven wasted no time jumping ahead of the Pointers 4-1 early in the game. Sparrows Point would battle back to end the half 8-5, but they were outscored 6-2 in the second half.

Next season the Pointers will be playing without the services of several key senior players from this year's squad including Becca Zafia, Maggie Shifflett and Lindsey Miller. However, they will reload with a strong class of seniors next year that have played on varsity since their sophomore season.

The squad will return their starting goalie Becky Wortham, their leading scorer, Maci Zellars, and Becky and Miranda Rudacille.

“Those girls have a great connection from playing together in rec ball,” said Fawkes. "Our goals next year will be to win region.”

Becky Rudacille added: “I feel like we will have a really good team next year too, we are all scheduled to go to camps together so we will get even better.”
