Photo of the Day: Garden Visitor

Dundalk resident Dotty Cristy would like some help identifying this visitor to her yard.

Dundalk resident (and amateur photographer) Dotty Cristy found what appears to be an egg-laden caterpillar on the Morning Glory plants in her garden.

In sending the picture to Dundalk Patch, Cristy said she hopes Patch readers might know what the creature is (butterfly or moth) and what the white things are on its back.

Do you have any information or advice for Cristy? Let her know in the comments section below.

Dotty, that is a hornworm (Manduca sexta). The white things on it's back are parasitic wasp cocoons. If you look up hornworm on Wikipedia you will get more information and pix of hornworms.
