Volunteers Welcome at Bread and Cheese Creek Cleanup Saturday

Organizers hope to clean the stream from Berkshire to North Point Road.

If you enjoy putting on your hip waders and walking through creeks, picking up trash and otherwise cleaning up the environment, Clean Bread and Cheese Creek needs you.

And if you'd prefer to stay clean and dry, there's a job for you too.

The Clean Bread and Cheese Creek organization will host a cleanup from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The plan is to clean the segment of Bread and Cheese from the Berkshire area to North Point Road.

"We realize this is a rather ambitious amount of stream to try to cover in a single cleanup, but we feel we can do it," founder John Long wrote in an email to Dundalk patch. "We nearly covered this amount of ground in our spring Bread and Cheese Creek cleanup so we are going to attempt to go a little farther."

This portion of the creek is particularly susceptible to littering because of the dense development and population in the area and the direct drainage of alleys and streets into the creek, according to Long.

The group is thankful for a large trash bin that will be provided by the Baltimore County Highways department. Pre-cleanup scouting trips have allowed volunteers to identify several couches and shopping carts that need to be removed from the creek.

Organizers will provide water, snacks and lunch for all volunteers, as well as gloves and some tools and waders for sign-out use. Long said volunteers should bring tools to use if they have them.

Students can volunteer and receive Community Service Learning credit, according to Long.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and the cleanup will begin at 8 a.m.
