Keep Umbrella Handy, Car Shows Galore, Navy Band to Perform, Pancake Breakfast

Information to get your week in Dundalk started.

1. The Weather: The week will bring a mix of sun and rain, according to the National Weather Service. Monday—Columbus Day, by the way—will be partly sunny with a high of about 71 degrees. Tuesday is expected to be mostly sunny, followed by a cloudy Wednesday with a 40 percent chance of showers Wednesday night. Thursday will be mostly sunny with a 30 percent chance of rain at night. The week will end with sunshine on Friday.

2. From history.com's This Day in History: On Oct. 14, 1947, "U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound.

"Yeager, born in Myra, West Virginia, in 1923, was a combat fighter during World War II and flew 64 missions over Europe. He shot down 13 German planes and was himself shot down over France, but he escaped capture with the assistance of the French Underground. After the war, he was among several volunteers chosen to test-fly the experimental X-1 rocket plane, built by the Bell Aircraft Company to explore the possibility of supersonic flight."

3. The U.S. Naval Academy Band will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dundalk Middle School.

4. A Fall Fest bull roast and silent auction will be held Friday at the UAW Hall, 1010 S. Oldham St.

5. A classic car show and food drive will be held Saturday on the Costas Inn parking lot.

Bonus: The Sparrows Point High School PTSA will hold its second annual car truck and motorcycle show Saturday at the school, 7400 North Point Road in Edgemere.

Bonus No. 2: The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dundalk Memorial Post 6694, will hold a pancake breakfast Saturday at the post hall, 6712 Pine Ave.
