Quietly and capably, the Baltimore Blast is in the MISL championship series for the third straight year.
Did you know the Baltimore Blast is headed to the MISL championship series for the third year in a row, and that championship series begins Thursday? Neither did I. (Until, obviously, I received the information via an MISL press release). So I'm sitting here, feeling sorry for the Blast, a team that routinely makes the playoffs and has five MISL championships to its name. The team's most recent title came in the 2008-09 season (no having to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the most recent championship for this team!). While the Blast lost in the finals in 2011 and 2012, this is the sixth straight year the team has been in the playoffs (and the third straight year it's been in the league's equivalent of the Super Bowl). The team's most …

Dundalk Patch presents its Photo of the Day.
This past weekend, we left behind one of the vestiges of winter when we made the transition from Eastern Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time. Old Dundalk resident Barb Stokes marked another milestone in time when she packed away her purple flamingo and brought out the orange one, passing her loyalty and cheering energy from the Baltimore Ravens to the Baltimore Orioles. Here's hoping the baseball birds have the same successful season as their football counterparts. Go Birds! View previous Photos of the Day here. Do you have a photo you'd like considered as Dundalk Patch's Photo of the Day? Add it to this article by clicking on the "upload photos and videos" button or send it to marge.neal@patch.com. The Pro Bowl center pledged to establish a reading center at the school and then closed the curtain on his playing career.
Battle Grove Elementary School found itself at the center of the pro football universe Friday morning when it received a visit from Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk. After hearing Birk's promise to create and stock a community reading lab at the school, Battle Grove fifth-graders found themselves among the first to hear officially of Birk's retirement from professional football. The six-time Pro Bowl player put the cap on his 15-season career (11 years with the Minnesota Vikings and the final four with Baltimore) by winning a Super Bowl ring. Birk has established a reputation for his off-the-field service and was named the 2011 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his service to community as well as his team, according to a statement …
The North Point Village school found itself at the center of the pro football universe when the Pro Bowl center used the occasion to announce his retirement.
Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk this morning pledged to stock a reading lab at Battle Grove Elementary School this and then used the occasion to announce his retirement from the National Football League. Birk will donate a "Reading Oasis," a community reading lab, to the North Point Village school. The six-time Pro Bowl Player and Super Bowl XLVII champion first visited Battle Grove in December, when he donated 350 books, according to a statement from Baltimore County Public Schools. At that time, he befriended 10-year-old Larry Bryant, a Battle Grove fifth-grader. He gave Larry tickets to the Dec. 23 Ravens game against the New York Giants, and on Friday announced that the donated reading lab would be known as the "Larry Bryant Reading …

Beth Bunch entered a Maryland Lottery "second chance" drawing and won big.
Sometimes losing sets you up for winning something even bigger. That was exactly the case recently when Dundalk resident Beth Bunch entered three losing $5 Baltimore Ravens scratch-off Maryland Lottery tickets in the agency's second-chance drawing. She entered her losing ticket numbers to bid on the season ticket prize, which proved to be a winning decision when her name was drawn from 136,816 entries in that category, according to a statement from the lottery agency. She told lottery officials that, while she has many friends who would like to go to games with her, she has promised the other season-opener seat to her father. Bunch wasn't the only big winner in a drawing held earlier this month, according to lottery officials. Mark …

The Ravens wide receiver appeared as part of an NFL program encouraging fitness for children.
Chase Elementary School students thought they were getting a "very special" NFL rally on Purple Friday. It turned out they didn't know how special. A group of purple-clad fifth-graders at Chase were the first to find out as they gathered for a late breakfast of cereal and milk, and they were joined by Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith. Smith, a former Terp fresh off the Ravens' win over the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, had breakfast, then spoke to the entire student body at Chase about fitness and nutrition. "Anytime I get the opportunity to go to any elementary school, even family and friends, I'll go out and hang out at the school all day," said Smith, who added he was "honored" to appear at Chase. The appearance was …

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.
It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …
