The North Point Peninsula Council hopes to file an appeal to a decision allowing Catholic Charities of Baltimore to proceed with an unwanted homeless housing program in Edgemere.
Dundalk Patch received the following letter from North Point Peninsula Council President Harry Wujek Jr.: Dear Friends, Neighbors and School Parents: This letter is an update on the Catholic Charities Hosanna House proposal next to St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Permission has been granted by a judge in Baltimore County to allow the proposed housing for age 50+ homeless/disabled women to proceed. However, leaders of the church, school and community have decided to appeal this decision based on the unified argument that the location near a school, senior housing and in a neighborhood that will be adversely affected is not appropriate. Catholic Charities of Baltimore officials will ask for several special exceptions so they can proceed with the Edgemere proposal.
A zoning hearing for a proposed permanent housing program for the homeless, planned for the Edgemere community, will be held Thursday in Towson. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in room 205 of the Jefferson Building, 105 W. Chesapeake Ave. Catholic Charities of Baltimore has proposed using the former St. Luke's Catholic Church's convent on Lodge Farm Road as a permanent housing program for 14 homeless individuals. To the Residents of the 6th District: As your representative, I wanted to be sure that you were aware of my position on the proposed Hosanna House in Edgemere. Let me be clear: I do not support the placement of the Hosanna House attached to the St. Luke Church. I simply feel that the proposed location is a haphazard placement of resources for people in need, in this case inappropriately locating a shelter near residential housing, a senior citizen facility, and most importantly directly next to a preschool. I find this neither thoughtful nor productive. While I commend the efforts of Catholic Charities and appreciate their commitment to our area, this shelter will not tackle the fundamental problem of homelessness in eastern Baltimore …

Community opposition to the proposed Hosanna House in Edgemere is picking up steam, if Thursday night's North Point Community Council meeting is any indication. About 45 residents attended to hear additional information and ask questions of Catholic Charities of Baltimore officials. The Catholic organization is proposing the permanent housing program for as many as 14 homeless men, ages 60 and up. They plan to use the vacant St. Luke's Catholic Church convent on Lodge Farm Road, which is now owned by Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities of Baltimore plans to create a residential program on the St. Luke's Place campus in Edgemere for as many as 14 homeless men. And Edgemere residents—at least those attending a small informational meeting Monday night—aren't happy about it. The "permanent housing" program will be installed in St. Luke's Catholic Church's former convent, which is nestled between the St. Luke's Preschool and St. Luke Place, a senior housing complex, on Lodge Farm Road. The program, to be housed at St. Luke's Catholic Church's former convent—now owned by Catholic Charities—will provide permanent housing, job placement and support services for 14 men, according to information from the organization. The open house will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8, at the convent building, next to St. Luke's Place senior housing complex and St. Luke's preschool on Lodge Farm Road in Edgemere. It is frustrating that they are holding this meeting during the day on a weekday. I am vehemently against this project and want to show my opposition, however missing work and diminishing my much needed income is not possible. I hope that there are other concerned residents of Edgemere who are able to attend and voice the opposition. more ›
