Dundalk's Charlesmont and Woodlawn's Chadwick Elementary are among six Maryland schools to win the academic recognition.
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz on Thursday honored two Baltimore County schools recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education as Blue Ribbon Schools. The principals and other members of the Charlesmont Elementary and Chadwick Elementary school communities received proclamations from Kamentez in honor of their schools being named among only six in the state to achieve the designation based upon academic and student success. Charlesmont principal Marsha Ayres and PTA president Margie Kolk were among the Charlesmont representatives on hand for the ceremony held in Towson. High student achievement in math and reading earns the prestigious award for the Dundalk school.
Charlesmont Elementary School in Dundalk is one of two Baltimore County schools and just six in the state to be named 2013 Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools. Maryland State Department of Education officials made the announcement Thursday morning. Chadwick Elementary School joins Charlesmont as Baltimore County winners. Both schools have high percentages of economically disadvantaged students, a factor that did not prevent either school from achieving sustained high academic performance, according to Baltimore County School System officials. Events of 200 years ago come alive with the touch of a stylus on a smart board.
With local school names like General John Stricker Middle School and Battle Monument School, it made perfect sense to celebrate Defenders Day and the 198th anniversary of the successful defense of Fort McHenry at Charlesmont Elementary School. The poignant flag-raising ceremony held on the school's lawn Friday morning was followed by a demonstration of the newly-launched War of 1812 virtual education resource center, warof1812.thinkport.org. Fifth-grade students, in creating a timeline of the Battle of North Point, were among the first students in Maryland to take advantage of the resource offered by Maryland Public Television.
