Rebuilding Together Baltimore officials have canceled a free energy efficiency workshop originally planned for Dec. 8. Insufficient interest in the seminar is blamed for the cancellation, according to Michele Hyland of the Colgate Improvement Association. Community leaders disagree with county's rat eradication plan.

Although Baltimore County paid for a successful rat eradication effort last year in Dundalk, the rats are back and the Colgate Improvement Association intends to develop it own eradication program even if it can't get all the help it wants from the county this time. At an improvement association board of directors meeting at Cactus Willie's near the Eastpoint Mall Tuesday, community leaders and a county representative discussed the issue with association president David Hyland pushing for a more aggressive rat eradication effort. Trash bins at the bus stop at 54th Street and Eastern Avenue begin overflowing the day after weekly collections, worsening over the ensuing six days, according to local residents. Members of the Colgate Improvement Association brought the issue to the attention of Bryan Sheppard, special assistant to the County Executive, at a meeting Tuesday night. Those living close to the bus stop are concerned the trash is exacerbate the local rat problem.

Recently, Baltimore County code enforcement inspectors did a sweep of the Colgate neighborhood, issuing 60 citations, mostly related to proper trash disposal. The issue of trash storage and disposal is directly tied to one of the community’s most pressing problems, rat eradication, according to residents who met with Lionel Van Dommelen, chief of code enforcement for Baltimore County. The mini-town hall organized by the Colgate Improvement Association was held Saturday at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Eastern Avenue.
