Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts senior Sydney Lawson has been named Student of the Week for the week of May. 6. Lawson was nominated for the honor by English teacher and AVID advisor Sean McComb. "Sydney is a dedicated AP Psychology student, serves as an AVID tutor, cares for an elderly family member in need and provides transportation to work for a fellow student in need," McComb said in an email to Patch. "She is an incredibly kind and giving student who is a role model for her peers." Congratulations!

Senior Alison McGuire was named a runner-up in the Maryland-wide contest.
Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts student Alison McGuire has been named a runner-up for a statewide computing award. McGuire received the recognition in the 2013 Maryland NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing, according to a statement from the school. The award, sponsored by Microsoft, Motorola Solutions Foundation and the National Center for Women and Information Technology, recognizes high school girls "for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology," according to the statement. Terri Grimes will be honored May 9 by the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County.
Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts para-educator Terri Grimes has been named Para-Educator of the Year by the Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County. After being presented with flowers and balloons when the announcement of her selection was made, Grimes will receive her award at the education support organization's 52nd annual recognition and retirement dinner set for May 9, at Martin's East. Selected southeast Baltimore County educators will be honored at a dinner April 25 at Martin's East.
The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce on Monday announced its annual Teachers Recognition Award winners. The business organization named Cathy Cunningham (Charlesmont Elementary School), Jason Adams (General John Stricker Middle), Nancy Yetter (Dundalk High) and Thelma Jachelski (Dundalk campus, The Community College of Baltimore County) its 2013 outstanding teachers of southeast Baltimore County. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available for the recognition event set for 5 to 8:30 p.m. April 25, at Martin's East. The sophomore was honored for her participation in school activities and her strong work ethic.
Sophomore Danielle Goins is the Student of the Week at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts for the week ending March 22. Goins was nominated for the honor by social studies teachers Sarah McComb and Steve Dorfman and English and AVID teacher Sean McComb. The educators nominated Goins for the honor based upon her broad participation in many school activities (including volleyball, lacrosse, Great Expectations show choir, concert choir, Future Educators of America and AVID), as well as her dedicated work ethic and friendly personality. Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts senior BJ Backmon is this week's Student of the Week. He was nominated for the honor by English teacher Natalie Avallone, who noted the dedicated student spent his Saturday in Annapolis meeting with the Maryland Association of Student Councils to discuss anti-bullying efforts in schools. "He is a committed member of the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) and has worked throughout his four years at Patapsco to make this school a safe, supportive and (through his art magnet studies) artfully decorated environment for all," Avallone said in an email to Dundalk Patch. Two Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts seniors won awards in the Optimist Club of Timonium's Young Artists Showcase.
Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts students continue to win recognition for both their school and their artwork. Two students recently won awards in the Young Artists Showcase, an art exhibition sponsored by the Optimist Club of Timonium, school officials have announced. Senior Alaina Savarese received first place honors in photography while senior Safiya Brown was named the third-place winner in painting. Brown made news just last week when it was announced she won a countywide magnet school poster contest.That award-winning work will be featured in Baltimore County Public Schools magnet program literature next year, and also advances to a national competition sponsored by Magnet Schools of America. Superintendent Dallas Dance officially recommended the closure at a late-January board meeting.
(Update 11:10 p.m.)— Following long, contentious debate, the Baltimore County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to approve a proposal by Superintendent Dallas Dance to close the Eastwood Elementary School facility. "I think ultimately in our roles as board members to look at education opportunities for students we just felt [the Eastwood STEM magnet program] is an exceptional program that should be expanded," Board President Lawrence Schmidt said after the vote.
