Wrestling: Sparrows Point Holds Off Eastern Tech, 32-31

The Pointers won 8 of 14 matches to defeat the Mavericks Thursday night in Essex.

Eastern Tech wrestler Eric Isennock won his battle against Sparrows Point’s Manny Pritt. But in the end, it was Pritt and Sparrows Point that won the war in an early-season showdown of two of the better wrestling programs in Baltimore County. Isennock helped host Eastern Tech rally from a 7-point deficit to tie the score at 31, following his 5-1 win over Pritt in their 285-pound match. The match was the last of the evening, but since Sparrows Point won eight of 14 matches, it was awarded an extra point and the 32-31 win. For the Pointers, the victory was an emotional one. It provided them with a measure of revenge after Eastern Tech defeated Sparrows Point twice in a week last season, including in the Class 1A/2A North semifinals. “This …

Eastern Tech Scores Big Win over Kenwood

Francis Massally rushes for 128 yards and two touchdowns as the Mavericks cruise to a 47-14 victory in prep football.

Eastern Tech had not gotten off to a stellar start in 2011. First, the Mavericks’ season-opener against City was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. Then, Eastern Tech lost last week at 2010 Class 3A finalist Franklin, 13-2. There would be no let down for Eastern Tech on Friday when it hosted Essex rival Kenwood at CCBC Essex. Junior tailback Francis Massally rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries as the Mavericks cruised to a 47-14 victory. “Football is a game of field positions and we were fortunate to have made some key plays,” Eastern Tech coach Marc Mesaros said. “If not, the game could have gone in a completely different direction.” Kenwood (0-3) actually led 8-7 following an 8-yard touchdown run by senior running back …

Prep Football: Big Second Half Leads Franklin Over Eastern Tech

Jackson Thornton and Reggie Ellis hook up for a deep touchdown and linebacker Corbin McClary takes a pick to the house in 13-2 win.

In a first half where he completed just one of five passes and absorbed three punishing Eastern Tech sacks, Franklin quarterback Jackson Thornton said he couldn’t have imagined things getting much worse. Then, the third quarter finally rolled around. Following a Mavericks’ three-and-out to start the half, Thornton connected on a 59-yard bomb to wide out Reggie Ellis that put the Indians ahead, 7-2, and swung the momentum in favor of a Franklin squad, and crowd, that had seemingly been waiting all game to erupt. On Eastern Tech’s ensuing drive, Mavericks' quarterback Kyle Bosserman seemed primed to answer, scampering for 26 yards on third down to put his offense near midfield. However, after a sack on the following play, the Indians defense…

Eastern Tech Finally Ready to Kick Off Football Season

The Mavericks play Friday at Franklin after last week's game vs. City was canceled.

The Eastern Tech Mavericks football program has had an impressive four-year run. The Mavericks, coached by Marc Mesaros, were Class 2A state titlists in 2009 after two consecutive runner-up finishes to River Hill of Howard County, and last fall, reached the Class 2A state semifinals, ending with an 11-2 record. As a Class 3A program this year, the Mavericks have risen into Baltimore County's difficult Class 3A-4A, home of programs such as three-time state champion Hereford and last year's Class 3A state runner-up Franklin. After a scheduled season-opener against City College of Baltimore City was canceled, the Mavericks will visit a Franklin squad that is still smarting from a season-opening 30-7 loss to Henry A. Wise of Prince George's …

Students in the Johns Hopkins University Engineering Innovation program put their noodles to the test at Eastern Technical High School Friday, July 29, but not in the way one might think. Each group of students in the four-week program, which covered all manner of things engineering, used only half a pound of dry spaghetti noodles and glue to create a bridge "to support as much weight as possible without collapsing. The competition [held Friday] to test the bridges’ strength represents the culminating activity of the program," according to a news release. "Eastern Tech volunteered to host this year," said Michael Karweit, academic director of the …

Patapsco Boys Open Holiday Tourney With Big Win

Moving to 6-1 on the season after win over Pikesville, the Patriot boys advance to holiday tournament against Westminster. Patapsco girls, Eastern Tech boys and girls fall, will play in consolation round Wednesday.

Patapsco guard Devin James acknowledged his team got off to a poor start against Pikesville Tuesday in the nightcap of the Patriots' second annual holiday tournament. They led winless Pikesville by just two points after the first quarter. "In the first quarter, we couldn't get in sync," James said. "We weren't hitting a lot of shots and we were turning the ball over, rushing things." No worries. Patapsco took better care of the ball, hit the glass and got out on the fast break in the second quarter. Led by James' six points in the quarter, the Patriots rolled to a 30-20 halftime margin – still struggling with their shooting a bit – and then pulled away to a 64-33 win after intermission. The victory moved Patapsco to a 6-1 record on the …
