Gallery: Dundalk's Heritage Fair

Dundalk's 37th annual Heritage Fair was held June 29 to July 1 in Heritage Park.

The small village green known as Heritage Park becomes a temporary village of a different sort when it hosts Dundalk's Heritage Fair each year. The fair, started as a one-time celebration of the nation's bicentennial in 1976, has morphed into what local residents like to claim is the nation's longest (and some say biggest) Independence Day celebration. Musical acts, carnival rides, arts and crafts areas, food booths and a beer garden all combine to become the party that offers something for all ages. Enjoy these pictures of the 2012 Heritage Fair, and please add any of yours that you would like to share with your neighbors.

Heritage Fair Rebounds After Storm Setback

The annual Independence Day celebration opened three hours late and several acts had to be canceled on Saturday.

Heritage Park took a wallop Friday night when the storm rolled through town, but the relentless efforts of volunteers enabled Heritage Fair to reopen a few hours late on Saturday and finish with a flair on Sunday. Dundalk's annual three-day Independence Day celebration attracted big crowds with big-name acts like Dennis DeYoung and Joan Jett and an entertainment and activity schedule that included something for all ages. Friday's schedule got off without a hitch, as the thunderstorm rolled in  after DeYoung called it a night and the crowds left the park. Overnight, strong winds and rain played havoc on vendor booths and goods, and the park lost power for a time, according to fair volunteer Marilyn Doyle. "There was a power problem, but it …

Joan Jett is Heritage Fair's Main Act Tonight

Dundalk's 37th annual Independence Day celebration includes carnival rides, arts and crafts vendors, kids' activities, animal attractions and food galore.

The temperatures are near-record high, but the heat will turn up even more tonight when Joan Jett and the Blackhearts take the stage at Dundalk's Heritage Fair. As big as Friday night's crowd for Dennis DeYoung was— with people standing on or sitting in every available spot from one side of Heritage Park to the other, officials expect an even bigger crowd for Jett, who grew up in Montgomery County. The fair is always at the mercy of weather, and late June and early July can be unpredictable, with the possibilities of sudden thunderstorms and triple-digit temperatures. With three days of extreme heat in store for the event, fait entertainment chairman Bob Fogle said he remains an optimist and hopes people turn out for the celebration …

The upgrades to the gazebo were completed last year by the developer to meet a requirement for his Yorkway project. He will also provide a few extra years of maintenance. The gazebo was not built by John Vontran. Heritage Park is maintained by Baltimore County, not the DRC.   more ›

PHOTOS: Taking a Stroll in the Park

Feeding the squirrels at Dundalk's Heritage Park is a favorite activity for Holden Rodriguez.

With a plastic bag of peanuts in the shell, Holden Rodriguez, his grandmother and a family friend took a stroll to Heritage Park on Friday so the 17-month-old toddler could feed the squirrels. Throwing peanuts out to the squirrels in the village green is one of his favorite things to do, according to his grandmother, Theresa Rodriguez. Sporting a ferocious looking shark hat, it's a wonder the squirrels would come near him! Holden is the son of Stacie Merritt and Shawn Rodriguez of Logan Village.

Heritage Park Gazebo Facelift in Time for Fair

Yorkway development led to renovations. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday.

As a centerpiece and landmark of Dundalk’s Heritage Park in downtown Old Dundalk, the Heritage Park gazebo was due for some tender love and care. Amy Menzer, executive director of the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation, was one of the many community leaders who helped guide the completion of the gazebo's recent renovation, which was born out of the Yorkway Housing Development agreement.  “In a work session meeting I attended, there were questions about whether new park space should be created," Menzer said. "And I thought it was important to focus on improvements to our existing parks since there are several in short walking distance of the Yorkway Development.” Also, according to Menzer, residents adjacent to Keyway Park had said during …

Karebear, the funds for the Yorkway development are out tax dollars. Oleszewski's PUD took care of the issue on our backs. Do the math, taxpayers spend $22 million and in return get $1.6 million, and a revival of a gazebo.   more ›
