At Thanksgiving, Juggling Thanks With Grief

The sudden death of a high school classmate clashes with a holiday created to express thanks for what we have.

I realize I'm getting older—I get slapped in the face with that hard, cold truth every time I pass a mirror. And I realize that death is an inevitable part of life. But I'm no more prepared to be losing members of my high school class at the age of 55 than I was at the age of 18, when Carol "Shelly" Schreiber became the Kenwood High School Class of 1975's first member to slip the surly bonds of earth. Less than two weeks after the graduation speeches that included the typical "the world is your oyster, the sky's the limit, win one for the Gipper" sort of inspiration, Shelly was gone. Kamenetz Declares State of Emergency

County plans to open a shelter at Eastern Technical High School at 1 p.m.

UPDATED (11:59 a.m.)—Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz has declared a state of emergency in Baltimore County. The county has also announced that it will open its first Hurricane Sandy-related emergency shelter at Eastern Technical High School at 1 p.m. The shelter accepts pets, who will be kept in a separate, ventilated portion of the building. Owners will be allowed to visit with their pets while at the shelter. Two state-run shelters in the county are are currently open and available to residents. The state-run shelters are: Neither state-run shelter accepts pets. Boys Lacrosse: Patapsco Soundly Beaten by Kenwood

The Bluebirds bounce back following a loss to Owings Mills with a win over the Patriots to improve to 10-2 on the season.

Junior attack Nick Eliadis scored three goals and had two assists as Kenwood defeated Patapsco 13-6 on Thursday at CCBC Dundalk. Senior attack Jordan Boller scored four goals and had an assist and junior midfielder Eric Ulrich had a goal and three assists for the Bluebirds (10-2), who bounced back following a loss Tuesday to Owings Mills. Also for Kenwood, junior midfielder Troy Hagy scored two goals, senior attack Kevin Dellasantos had a goal and assist and goalie Ben Runk had 15 saves. The Bluebirds put the game away in the second half after they outscored Patapsco 7-1 during that span. Kenwood next plays at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at Dundalk.
