Alert Issued for 'Small' Middle River Sewage Spill

An overflow pipe has been capped to prevent future leaks, according to Baltimore County officials.

Baltimore County Department of Public Works employees have capped an overflow pipe that caused about 200 gallons of sewage to spill into a tributary of the Middle River near the Middle River Bridge adjacent to the Hawthorne community. "It's a complicated thing from a number of different angles," Public Works spokesman David Fidler said Tuesday. "There was some sort of utility work by the county being done on a sewer line in that area, and the spill appears to have come from an overflow pipe." The spill is estimated to be about 200 gallons, which Fidler said is "very, very small." The department is required by law to issue a statement and notify media outlets and the public when a spill is 10,000 gallons or more, Fidler said. "We have a …

Bowling Legend Danny Wiseman to Host Tournament

One of the greatest bowlers of all times is seeking bowlers and sponsors for his youth scholarship tournament set for Oct. 14 at Country Club Lanes in Middle River.

Father's Day was an emotional weekend for Danny Wiseman. The weekend came just after the 20th anniversary of the death of his father, Albert, to cancer. Wiseman spent the weekend doing what he has done almost all his life: bowl. Wiseman, a Dundalk native, won his second straight PBA East Regional title Sunday as he defeated Tommy Dakouvanos, 267-200, in the finals of the Howell Lanes Open in Howell, NJ. That win came a week after Wiseman defeated Jeff Zaffino, 279-268, in the finals of Dominick V. Diccio Memorial in Turnersville, NJ. It was weeks like that which helped Wiseman remember how much fun he can still have bowling. "These last two weeks really got my competitive juices going," Wiseman said. "It's just not as easy to do as it …

Former Baltimore City police officer Rodney Cintron was sentenced to 42 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

A Middle River man on Wednesday became the 11th Baltimore City police officer sentenced in an illegal towing scheme involving a Rosedale auto shop. Rodney Cintron, 32, of Middle River, was sentenced to to 42 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release on charges of conspiracy to commit and committing extortion, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland. The owners of Majestic Auto Repair paid Cintron and other Baltimore City police officers to arrange for their company—rather than a city-authorized business—to tow vehicles from accident scenes and make repairs, according to a news release. Faded Image Ready to 'Rock the River'

The popular local band will join HyJinx on June 3 to headline the inaugural "Rockin' the River" festival at Conrad's Ruth Villa in Middle River.

Rob Baier said he just loves music. It was that joy that led Baier to help found the band, Faded Image, 15 years ago. In the years since then, Faded Image has become one of the most popular local bands in the region. Baier, along with bandmates Stuart Sadler (drums/vocals), John Goodman (guitar) and Brian White (bass), play around 60 dates a year across Maryland, Virginia and as far south as Key West, Fla. It is that popularity that led the Marine Trades Association of Baltimore County to book Faded Image, along with HyJinx to headline the inaugural "Rockin' the River" festival. The festival is set to run from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. June 3 at Conrad's Ruth Villa in Middle River. The cost of the event is $10, with food, beer and soda available for…

Arrival of World War II Bombers Delayed

Rain and poor visual conditions forced the Commemorative Air Force to push back to Tuesday its trip to Martin State Airport.

Poor weather conditions have forced the delay of the arrival of three World War II bombers, set to be at Martin State Airport Monday afternoon. Commemorative Air Force spokeswoman Kim Pardon said the weather made it impossible for the three bombers—a B-29 "Fifi," a B-24 and a P-51 Mustang—to arrive in Middle River. "Unfortunately, this happens from time to time," said Pardon, who added that the aircraft are coming from Lexington, KY. "The weather is not something we can always plan for." Pardon said the delay will mean the bombers will now only be in Maryland on Tuesday and Wednesday. The visit is part of the Maryland Aviation Museum's 100th anniversary celebration of the Glenn L. Martin Co. Whether the bombers will be able to arrive …

No Body? No Problem for Baltimore County Homicide Prosecutors

Technology played a critical role in the murder convictions of Jason Gross and Dennis Tetso.

Like many teenagers, Rochelle Battle was attached to her cell phone. Battle’s phone was a lifeline to her world to the point that she made 1,900 calls in December 2008. The 16-year-old also made 129 calls from her phone through the first six days of March 2009. Then, without any warning, the calls stopped on March 6, 2009. No more texts, voicemails or photos. Battle, who lived in the Pimlico community of Baltimore, just disappeared. Baltimore County prosecutors said Battle was murdered and her cell phone would go a long way toward proving who killed her. That killer turned out to be 36-year-old Jason Gross. The Middle River man was convicted in October of murdering the teen. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 6. Prosecutors obtained a …

'The Greatest Generation' Reflects on Veterans Day

During a service in Middle River, World War II veterans Al Clasing, Leon Kirkendall and Edgar Launstein honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Al Clasing knows he is literally part of a dying breed. Clasing, joined by fellow veterans and Essex residents Edgar Launstein and Leon Kirkendall, is part of “The Greatest Generation,” World War II veterans who helped fight off the Nazis and Imperial Japan nearly 70 years ago. The men, each pushing 90, stood tall Friday as they helped honor fellow former soldiers, sailors and marines as part of a Veterans Day ceremony at the Lamky, Luther, Whitehead Veterans Memorial in Middle River. Clasing, 86, enlisted in the U.S. Navy just shy of his 18th birthday. Assigned to the U. S. Navy III Amphibious Forces, Clasing served in the Pacific Theatre, where he participated in the amphibious invasions at Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, the Marshall Islands …

The sad part is that we are losing over 1,000 a day. My father fought in the Philippines and was called up for Korea. He became one of those stats in 2001, at the age of 81. After the war he stayed in the Army Reserve so my mother would have medical care after he died. Thank God for that as my mother is 91.   more ›

Lower Boating Speed Limit for Middle River Rejected

More than 100 people poured into the Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Co. to debate the issue during a public hearing on Thursday.

A proposal to lower the speed limit on the Middle River to 6 knots up to the mouth of the river was rejected Thursday by a state Department of Natural Resources panel. The Boat Act Advisory Committee voted 14-3 to defeat the proposal, originally proposed by the Bowleys Condo Marina and the Bowleys Condo Association. The vote came after more than 100 people turned out for a public hearing at the Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Compnay to debate the issue. Those in favor of a lower speed limit cited safety concerns, while those against it worried about harmful impacts on recreational activity and businesses along Middle River. Lowering the speed limit would limit water-based activities, DNR police don’t believe a change is necessary and that…

Proposed Lower Boat Speeds on Middle River Sparks Debate

A proposal would lower the speed limit in Middle River to 6 knots from the top to the mouth of the river.

Boaters on Middle River could face significantly slower speeds if a new speed limit is adopted by the state Department of Natural Resources. There will be a public meeting beginning at 10 a.m. today at the Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Co. to discuss whether to extend the 6 knots speed limit from the top into the the mouth of the river, where speeds currently top out at 35 knots.  The Bowleys Condo Marina and the Bowleys Condo Association applied for the speed limit in the spring, citing safety concerns and damage to the marina. That move has many boaters and businesses along Middle River upset. Brian Schneider, who owns Tradewinds Marina, said extending the lower speed limit would kill business to those along Middle River, as boaters …
