Metal-Detecting Wands Issued to Officers in Baltimore County Schools

Gun incidents at schools in Perry Hall and Essex prompted use of the new tools.

On-duty police officers in Baltimore County Public Schools have a new tool at their disposal—metal-detecting wands. The wands, intended to help school resource officers detect weapons on school grounds, are in direct response to the shooting at Perry Hall High School on Aug. 27 and gun incident at Stemmers Run Middle School in Essex on Sept. 11, according to Baltimore County Police Department Chief Jim Johnson. "I believe that the devices have the potential to enhance school security. Certainly, we believe that in the future, these devices could be effective at keeping weapons out of schools," Johnson said. Daniel Borowy of Perry Hall High School and his guidance counselor, Jesse Wasmer, earned huge cheers at the playoff game at Oriole Park Sunday night.

Some of the biggest cheers at Oriole Park Sunday night came before the game even started.  A sellout crowd stood as Perry Hall High student Daniel Borowy threw out the ceremonial first pitch with his guidance counselor, Jesse Wasmer.  Six weeks ago, Borowy, 17, was seriously wounded when he was shot in the high school lunchroom, allegedly at the hands of a fellow student. Wasmer is credited with intervening and preventing further violence. Click here to see Patch's coverage of the Perry Hall High shooting. Orioles fans were especially delighted to see the balls caught by Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts—two popular players who are unable play due to injury.

Perry Hall Shooting Victim to Attend Essex Fundraiser

A fundraiser will be held this weekend in Essex for Daniel Borowy, the victim in last month's shooting at Perry Hall High.

In a matter of weeks, what was supposed to be a small gathering on the water to mark the end of the summer has become a huge show of support for Perry Hall's own comeback story. The Bon Voyage Summer Party will welcome upwards of 200 boats and thousands of revelers to Hart-Miller Island in Essex, and one special guest: Daniel Borowy, the 17-year-old Perry Hall High School student injured in a shooting there last month. The fundraiser, scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., will help pay for Borowy's short- and long-term medical bills. "You've got a kid who's in the supposedly safest place in the world can be, minding their own business, and they get shot inn the back," said Sue Doyle, the Perry Hall resident and 1989 PHHS graduate …
