Steelworkers Recalled To Sparrows Point

An agreement reached between The Renco Group and Severstal North America will begin recalling steelworkers. Sparrows Point expected to begin making steel again by the end of May.

As a result of an agreement reached between Severstal North America and The Renco Group, the New York-based investment company in the midst of purchasing the steel mill at Sparrows Point and two other Severstal mills, Sparrows Point steelworkers will begin being recalled to prepare for the restart of the primary operations at the plant. The first employees recalled will be those required to return “L” blast furnace, steelmaking, and the hot strip mill to operating status. Employees will return to work in phases over the next several weeks, according to a letter today to Sparrows Point employees signed by John Cirri, president of United Steelworkers Local 9477, and David A. I agree with Charles Hand. My dad retired from "Beth Steel" after 40 years in the 1960's. those days. There were well over 20,000 employees in those days and the town was still operational. The steel mill in dundalk like GM, Western Electric and others provided jobs that made it possible for our parents to provide a better future for their children.
