Nancy Cook wants sports fans to embrace the Orioles and 'Orange Wednesdays.'
Now that baseball season is in full swing, Dundalk native Nancy Cook wants to paint the town orange. Recognizing how important the "12th man" is to the Baltimore Ravens, the longtime baseball fan wants the 10th man to step forward and embrace the Baltimore Orioles will equal love and enthusiasm. She wants her beloved boys of summer to feel just a small slice of the love shown for the Ravens. And she wants that love to be showered upon the Birds sooner rather than later. "I want to start Orange Wednesdays," she told Dundalk Patch. "The Ravens have Purple Fridays, and I don't want to interfere with that, because some people wear their purple on Fridays year-round." If Cook has her way, the work day referred to by many as "hump day" will soon…

Opening the season against a team like the Minnesota Twins lets Orioles fans say the team had a winning record at least once during the season!
Ah, early April—the one time of year when Baltimore Orioles fans can (usually) say the team is in the hunt. For at least the past 15 years, the promise of spring and the results of "winter rebuilding" are all we Bird fans have had to hang our baseball caps on. We've heard it all before—the stories about rebuilding, about rosters filled with "youngsters," and about how, this year, things really will be different. I half-listened to the opening day game on Friday, but made it a point to get up from my desk and watch as the team was called out onto the field. Without exaggeration, I recognized about five names—among them Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters. I sadly thought back to Baltimore's baseball glory days—actually more like glory years or …

Seafood houses shuttered for the winter slowly come back to life, much to the joy of local residents.
All is right with the world. I had my first crabs of the season on Saturday, which is the benchmark I use to truly welcome the spring and summer seasons. And I got the crustaceans at Captain Jimmy's on North Point Road, which was closed for the winter and reopened Friday. One of the things I like about most of eastern Baltimore County is that there is a reputable, dependable crab house on nearly every street corner (or so it seems). Dundalkians enjoy their crabs from a variety of local places, including Salty Dog's, Costas Inn, Jimmy's Famous Seafood, The Islander and Dock of the Bay. What made these Captain Jimmy's crabs special was the simple ingredient of anticipation. I drive by the dark storefront every day while carrying out my …

A mild winter actually made me forget about the coming of spring — or at least the "real" spring.
For the first time in as many years as I can remember, I didn't do my annual spring countdown. I absolutely abhor winter and everything it usually brings—frigid temperatures, howling, slap-you-in-the-face winds, snowstorms that bring normal life to a standstill (can you say Blizzard of 2010?) and scare-the-life-out-of-you ice storms. To get through the winter, I usually enjoy crossing off another day on the spring countdown, and rubbing my hands in glee knowing that my favorite time of year (summer, actually) is one day closer. Which also means one more day of that nasty winter season is behind me. With winter missing in action this year, I didn't do the countdown. It pretty much seems like we've been in spring since November. So the …

Honestly, I just don't think there is that much love for the Orioles here anymore. The organization has changed too much and not for the better.   more ›
