Edgemere's Shallow Creek Cafe to Close March 22

The owners of the used bookstore and cafe fought the economy until they had no choice but to close.

After giving it their all, the owners of the Shallow Creek Bookstore Cafe in Edgemere have decided to close their doors for good. "It is with great sadness that we must announce that Shallow Creek will be closing permanently on Friday, March 22, 2013," the owners said in a Facebook post. "It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve our community for the past four and a half years." Sisters Laura Dernoga and Lynette Christensen and their mother, Gail Hoffman, opened the business in October 2008, just before the stock market crashed and the government officially declared the nation was in an economic recession. Very sad to hear this ! I really hate the idea of a Dollar store taking the place of the bowling alley as well....what's next 5 cell phone stores and 8 nail salons...seems to be the only stores this area gets   more ›

Shallow Creek Cafe Struggling to Stay Alive

Owners of the Edgemere used bookstore and cafe hope their "labor of love" is not next in a long line of local business closures.

Sisters Laura Dernoga and Lynette Christensen are not too proud to say they need the support of the community to make their labor of love a success. The sisters, along with partner—and mother—Gail Hoffman, own Shallow Creek Bookstore Cafe on North Point Road in Edgemere. With Edgemere businesses dropping like flies recently, with the closures of Chesapeake Terrace Deli, Chewy's, Edgemere Bowl and convenience store Pantry One, Dernoga and Christensen hope theirs isn't next. But that's a very real possibility, they say. The small business has struggled to stay alive almost since opening its doors, and the continuing economic slump, along with the shuttering of RG Steel, isn't helping matters. I love this place! I think Wayne might have something there, at least putting more tables, maybe larger square ones along the windows and instead of the upholstered chairs have tables. The books are nice, I think, but maybe edit them down a bit for seating.   more ›
