Firefighters Lost at Shiller's Remembered

Monument unveiled on Holabird Avenue at site of 1984 blaze that took the lives of three firefighters.

The afternoon that her brother, James A. Kimble, and two other firefighters, Henry W. Rayner, Jr., and Walter J. Bawroski, Sr., died, was similar to this past Oct. 22, Dottie Kimbel said, 26 years to the day later. Last month, the firefighters were honored with a memorial at the site of what became known as "Shiller's fire." "It was just like today," Kimbel said after the unveiling of a granite memorial at 7324 Holabird Ave. on the property of C & E Insurance, next door to Gavin's Furniture, located on the former Shiller's site.
