"A century of steel making as we know it has come to an end" in Baltimore County, says County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.
The future of more than five miles of land in Sparrows Point no longer lies in in the steel mills. Owners of the former RG Steel plant plan to sell off a $300 million cold mill and eventually raze the buildings on the property, selling the remains for scrap. A second company that owns the land will end up being responsible for helping the county shape the future of the industrial land, according to County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "A century of steel-making as we know it has come to an end," said Kamenetz during a Thursday news conference. Kamenetz said Hilco Trading which owns some of the buildings and equipment, "plans to liquidate every asset and bring the structures down to the ground." The announcement brings an end to the plant that …

The USNS Range Sentinel is being dismantled at the Sparrows Point Shipyard.
With the awarding of a Naval shipbreaking contract to BB Metals in Sparrows Point, elected leaders are touting the creation of new jobs at the Sparrows Point Shipyard. But after a news conference Thursday called by U.S. Rep. C.A. Ducth Ruppersberger, it isn't clear how many—if any—new jobs were created for the dismantling of the USNS Range Sentinel, a Navy ship that, in its prime, saw action in World War II. BB Metals, in residence at the shipyard, was awarded a federal contract to dismantle the vessel and recycle any materials that can be reused. Ruppersberger said in a news release that 55 new jobs were created. The accuracy of that number may be in some doubt. Most of the worker slots assigned to the dismantling of the Sentinel were …

The Congressman says that steel plant that has helped build this country for 120 years should remain for another 120 years.
U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger on Friday issued the following statement regarding Wednesday's sale of RG Steel's Sparrows Point stell plant to an industrial liquidator: “The Sparrows Point plant and its steelworkers have produced the steel that has literally built our country for the last 120 years. It could and should continue for another 120 years. With a prime location in one of the best deep-water ports in the United States, one of the country’s largest blast furnaces, a state-of-the-art continuous cold rolling mill and the world’s best workers, it remains a viable operation for a smart buyer with access to raw materials. While this week’s auction did not produce this buyer, it did buy time to find one over the next six months. The…

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz issued the following statement in response to today's announcement that RG Steel plans to idle its steelmaking operations at its Sparrows Point plant and additional plants in West Virginia and Ohio: "Once again, the hard-working men and women at RG Steel Sparrows Point are facing tough times. We are keenly aware that thousands of workers and their families depend on steel making for their livelihood—plus thousands more who work for suppliers and businesses related to the Sparrows Point mill. Baltimore County's rapid response workforce development team will be working with RG Steel, the United Steelworkers and our State partners to be sure workers have timely information about all unemployment …
