"A century of steel making as we know it has come to an end" in Baltimore County, says County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.
The future of more than five miles of land in Sparrows Point no longer lies in in the steel mills. Owners of the former RG Steel plant plan to sell off a $300 million cold mill and eventually raze the buildings on the property, selling the remains for scrap. A second company that owns the land will end up being responsible for helping the county shape the future of the industrial land, according to County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "A century of steel-making as we know it has come to an end," said Kamenetz during a Thursday news conference. Kamenetz said Hilco Trading which owns some of the buildings and equipment, "plans to liquidate every asset and bring the structures down to the ground." The announcement brings an end to the plant that …

Sparrows Point workers grieve as they begin making plans for a life after steel.
I dreamt about Sparrows Point the other night, dreamt that I was driving around Dundalk with my niece and no matter where we turned we ran into big black mill buildings stretching as far as the eye could see. I never worked at Sparrows Point so it’s strange that I dream about it from time to time. Those recurring dreams may be part of the reason why I wrote Roots of Steel: Boom and Bust in an American Mill Town, a workers’ history of Sparrows Point. The book tells the story of my family and my community. For anyone who grew up in southeastern Baltimore county, the Sparrows Point steelworks was both bedrock—the foundation of the community’s prosperity and security—and myth. Now that the works has been sold to Hilco Industries, an industrial…

According to the Baltimore Sun, about 2,000 people work at the Edgemere plant and the company plans to lay off 720 employees, but expects them to be back on the job by early March.
Thursday, December 29, 2011
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz sent a letter to John Goodwin, president and CEO of RG Steel, asking for details on the recent layoffs.
The Edgemere community rejoiced when RG Steel purchased the Sparrows Point steel mill and began recalling laid off workers in March, but that joy turned to fear this week as many workers were told not to report to work. In response, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz sent a letter Thursday to John Goodwin, the president and chief executive officer of RG Steel, LLC, requesting additional information regarding the current plant closure at the Sparrows Point steel mill and offering support. The letter stated: Dear Mr. Goodwin, The recent uncertainty regarding the future of the steel mill at Sparrows Point has been very difficult for the men and women who have a proud tradition of steelmaking in eastern Baltimore County. Thousands of …

I remember red minidress uniforms, working at the counter, mopping floors, sharing Cokes and fries with girlfriends, meeting boys and collecting football helmets for my little brother.
My second job, if you don’t count babysitting, was as a cashier for the original Gino’s on North Point Boulevard when I was 17 and 18 years old, during my junior and senior years of high school at Sparrows Point. If you wanted to buy 45s, jeans or a certain fringe jacket, you had to get yourself a job, buddy, because back in the '70s, Mom and Dad didn’t dish out the dough for anything but necessities. Does anyone remember Gino’s collectible plastic football helmets? Back in the mid-'70s, Gino’s served soft serve ice cream for a while in mini NFL helmets. I believe it was some sort of ice cream promotion at the time, and each week or so they would offer a new helmet. You were also given a cardboard display and a decal to apply to your …

An agreement reached between The Renco Group and Severstal North America will begin recalling steelworkers. Sparrows Point expected to begin making steel again by the end of May.
As a result of an agreement reached between Severstal North America and The Renco Group, the New York-based investment company in the midst of purchasing the steel mill at Sparrows Point and two other Severstal mills, Sparrows Point steelworkers will begin being recalled to prepare for the restart of the primary operations at the plant. The first employees recalled will be those required to return “L” blast furnace, steelmaking, and the hot strip mill to operating status. Employees will return to work in phases over the next several weeks, according to a letter today to Sparrows Point employees signed by John Cirri, president of United Steelworkers Local 9477, and David A. Howard, vice president and general manager for Severstal at the …

John Cirri, president of United Steelworkers Local 9477, said the Renco Group, a New York-based holding company, remains in talks to purchase the steel mill at Sparrows Point.
A New York holding company that reportedly has signed a letter of intent to buy the Severstal-owned steel mill at Sparrows Point has met United Steelworkers union conditions to complete the purchase, a union leader said. The company, the Renco Group, is controlled by Ira Rennert, whose net worth was listed at $5.3 billion last year by Forbes magazine. In separate interviews, Severstal and Renco have previously told Patch.com they will neither confirm nor deny talks or Baltimore Brew accounts, citing unnamed sources saying Renco signed the letter of intent a month ago. In an e-mail Wednesday, John Cirri, president of United Steelworkers Local 9477, explained the union has successorship language in its basic labor agreement, stating …

John Cirri, president of Local 9477 of the United Steelworkers, remains hopeful the Sparrows Point mill will soon be sold and steel-making operations restarted.
The president of the local United Steelworkers union said he remained hopeful the Sparrows Point mill would soon be sold and steel-making operations restarted. But the union official, John Cirri, president of Local 9477 of the United Steelworkers, dismissed previous reports that Russian-owned Severstal North America would sell its operations to Ternium, the Argentinean-based steel manufacturer with operations in Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala and the United States. “The Argentineans were here for a day last month to look around, and they left,” Cirri said at an information fair Thursday for laid-off steelworkers at Sparrows Point. “That was it.” Cirri added, however, that as far as he knew, Severstal does remain in talks with one or two other…

Giant steelmaker Ternium won't comment on reported bid, officials’ tour of mill
Argentine steel-making giant Ternium has joined three other bidders seeking to buy the idled Sparrows Point mill, a Baltimore news website reports. The Baltimore Brew, citing unnamed sources, reported the Ternium bid comes less than a month after Sparrows Point owner Severstal's announcement that it would extend idling of primary operations through March, leaving 800 union workers without jobs. As the United Steelworkers Union presses Severstal to sell the facility by the end of the year, the company's CEO, Alexei Mordashov, isn't satisfied with the other three offers, the Brew's Mark Reutter reported. Reutter has reported and written extensively on Sparrows Point and is the author of Making Steel: Sparrows Point and the Rise and Ruin …
