Dundalk Community Theatre Presents 'Chess: The Musical'

The theater group concludes its season with the ABBA musical that opens Friday.

Dundalk Community Theatre will conclude its season with its production of Chess: The Musical, which opens this weekend. Set during the Cold War era, Chess centers around American and Russian Grandmaster chess players who face off in pursuit of the title of International Chess Champion. But more is at stake than the chess title; both men are also vying for the love of the same woman. The musical, which features the music of ABBA, originally opened in London in 1986 and the American version premiered on Broadway in 1988. Dundalk Student Shines in CCBC Nursing Program

Dundalk resident Tracy Pachilis recently was inducted in The Community College of Baltimore County's chapter of the Alpha Eta Honor Society.

Dundalk resident Tracy Pachilis was among the 46 students recently inducted in The Community College of Baltimore County's chapter of the Alpha Eta Honor Society. The organization honors allied health students for academic achievement, according to a statement from college officials. For the first time, a special ceremony was held to recognize the new inductees, college spokeswoman Jacquie Lucy said. "In the past they were recognized during the School of Health Professions Student Recognition Ceremony held prior to graduation," Lucy said in an email to Patch. Former CCBC Administrator to Lead New Hampshire College

Alicia B. Harvey-Smith has been named president of River Valley Community College.

The Board of Trustees of the Community College System of New Hampshire on March 26 announced the appointment of Alicia B. Harvey-Smith as president of River Valley Community College. Harvey-Smith's most recent post was that of vice president for student affairs at Baltimore City Community College, according to an annoucement on River Valley's website. Before that, Harvey-Smith served as the dean of learning and student development at The Community College of Baltimore County, where she was responsible for the budgeting, administration and evaluation of learning resources for academic and student services, according to the statement. Star-Gazing Party at CCBC Dundalk Friday

Dundalk residents can get a close-up and personal look at the evening sky, thanks to the gathering at the Sollers Point Road observatory.

If you've ever been accused of being a dreamer, or if you often catch yourself staring at the stars and just standing in awe of the universe around you, the Community College of Baltimore County has just the event for you. The college's Dundalk campus will host a Star Party from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 15, at its observatory on the front lawn of the campus at 7200 Sollers Point Road. The observatory (officially known as T Building) is equipped with a Celestron 14-inch CGE 1400 XLT telescope. CCBC Associate Professor David Ludwikoski runs the star-gazing gatherings, which are free and open to the public. CCBC Dundalk to Host Job Fair March 8

The free event is sponsored by the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce, the Baltimore County Office of Workforce development and the college.

A job fair featuring at least 13 employers will be held at the Dundalk campus of The Community College of Baltimore County on March 8. The event is being held jointly by the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce, Baltimore County's Office of Workforce Development and the college. The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the K Building lobby on the Dundalk campus, 7200 Sollers Point Road. Advance registration is not required. "Job seekers are encouraged to smile, bring multiple copies of their résumés and dress for success," according to a statement from the college. CCBC Dundalk Offers Free Dental Sealant Program

Children ages 6 to 18 are invited to receive treatment that will help prevent tooth decay.

Children ages 6 to 18 are encouraged to take advantage of a free service being offered by The Community College of Baltimore County. In cooperation with the Maryland Dental Hygienists Association, the college will offer "Sealant Saturday" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 9. Participating children will receive the application of a clear, colorless protective coating on their permanent molar teeth. The coating will help prevent tooth decay, according to a statement from the college. CCBC Named One of Baltimore Region's Top Workplaces

The Community College of Baltimore County is in the No. 5 spot on the Baltimore Sun's Top 10 Large Workplaces list published Sunday.

The Community College of Baltimore County has been named one of the region's top large companies by employees who participated in a Baltimore Sun survey. The Sun on Sunday published lists of the top large, midsize and small companies in the Baltimore region. CCBC snagged the fifth spot in the top 10 large companies, based upon employee feedback. The paper also named the region's top 20 midsize companies and the top 50 small workplaces. "I feel privileged to be among the 80 companies recognized as a Top Workplace in the Baltimore region," CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis said in a statement. “Earning this recognition is a testament to the great work our college does to foster student success." CCBC Lauded for Financial Reporting

The community college receives recognition from the Government Finance Officers Association for the 14th straight year.

For the 14th consecutive year, The Community College of Baltimore County has been recognized for excellence in financial reporting. The Government Finance officers Association recently awarded its Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the college, according to a statement from CCBC. “I am pleased to say that we have received this recognition for 14 consecutive years,” CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis said in the statement. “As an institution sustained by state and county funding, we understand the importance of serving as stewards of public money and public trust."
