The waders, gloves and tools of local volunteers are getting a workout this spring. Members of Clean Bread and Cheese Creek have been out in force almost every weekend lately, it seems, and this past weekend was no different. Lending a hand to another effort, creek volunteers helped out at an Earth Week cleanup project at Stansbury Park on Saturday. About a dozen Clean Bread and Cheese Creek members joined the effort that also included other community residents. Workers wearing waders walked the inside perimeter of the pond while other volunteers shadowed them on the shoreline to ensure no trash was missed, according to group founder John Long. Eastside Earth Week activities continue will a tool drive Friday and community cleanups on Saturday. But a forecast of rain for Sunday has caused organizers to postpone the Trash to Treasure Olympics, according to Leah Bunck of the Dundalk Renaissance Corp. A new and used tool drive will be held Friday throughout the business day at the DRC office, 11 Center Place. On Saturday, community residents are encouraged to participate in either of two cleanup efforts. The Dundalk Tenant Landlord Community Association will hold a cleanup of the 2900 blocks of Dunmanway, Sollers Point Road, Mornington Avenue and Liberty Parkway from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. If you're looking for a way to spend Saturday outside on what is forecasted to be a beautiful day, and help your community and the environment at the same time, opportunities are plentiful. Three local organizations are sponsoring community and environmental cleanups on Saturday, and more volunteers are always needed and welcome, according to organizers. Clean Bread and Cheese Creek volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to clean up the section of the stream that runs from Merritt Boulevard to Plainfield Road. This section of the creek is between two shopping centers and Merritt Boulevard, which contributes to both its waters and banks being choked with trash and debris, according to organizers.
