Got Stuff? Get It Appraised at St. Helena Event Saturday

The St. Helena Community Association will hold its third annual Dundalk Antiques Appraisal Day on Saturday.

We all dream of coming across something of Grandma's that's been languishing in an attic chest for years and discovering it's worth the proverbial small fortune.

Or maybe you hope that figurine in the china closet will help put the kids through college.

Or maybe you'd like to know what Uncle Bill's World War II artifact collection is worth so you can have it properly insured.

Whatever the reason for you wanting to know the value of a belonging, the St. Helena Community Association invites you to its third annual Dundalk Antiques Appraisal Day.

Several expert appraisers will be at the St. Helena Community Building Saturday to give approximate values to heirlooms, trinkets and unusual items belonging to area residents.

Participants are invited to bring up to three items. The cost is $20 for the first item, $10 for the second and the third appraisal is free.

All proceeds benefit the community association.

"This is our biggest fundraiser of the year," President Shirley Gregory told Patch. "This is an important event for us and it's a lot of fun."

To add to the festive atmosphere, the association will sell hot dogs, snacks and beverages.

A panel of accredited appraisers and experts in the area of American furniture, folk art and primitives, glasswares and porcelain, silver, pewter, jewelry, coins and clocks who will examine items and offer a verbal approximation of value.

At a past appraisal, one woman was told her heirloom was worth about $20,000, according to Gregory.

"Not everything people bring in is worth a lot, but it's fun to find out how much something is worth and to learn a little about its history," Gregory said.
