Man Hit, Killed by Amtrak Train in Essex is Identified

Kenneth Joseph Grabenstein, 55, of Delaware, was standing in the middle of the tracks, according to witnesses.

Police officials have identified the man hit and killed by an Amtrak train in Middle River Tuesday morning.

Kenneth James Grabenstein, 55, of Delaware, was declared dead at the scene, according to a Baltimore County public safety spokeswoman.

Baltimore County police officers from Essex Precinct 11 responded to the crash at Orems and Entrance roads at 11:12 a.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from county officials.

The victim was found dead when they arrived.

Witnesses, including the train's engineer, said they saw the man standing in the middle of the tracks, facing the train as it approached.

The engineer told officials he was unable to stop the train, which was traveling at 135 miles per hour, in time to avoid a collision.

Amtrak police officials will handle any additional investigation of the crash, according to Baltimore County officials.
